End of year update

I’m working on a new trailer. I have had a trailer for sometime. Its home made with wheels and hitch from a kit. The problem is that the center of gravity is too high and I have dumped it a few times. For Christmas my parents got me 16″ wheels with big apple tires and tube. They are made to work with an axle that mounts on one side. I hope to have a prototype working by the weekend.

My friends seem to think I’m crazy for continuing to ride in this weather. I don’t understand. My general rule is that anything under 3 miles I take the bike. For most of these trips I can get to places in less time than it takes them to scrape the ice and park their car let alone drive there. So we are in the cold weather for the same amount of time. They talk about slipping on the ice. With my studded tires I’m reducing that risk. Combined with less aggressive riding I’m probably in better shape to travel in the snow and ice than anyone in a car. Plus it isn’t that cold. It hasn’t gotten below 20F yet.

I am also convinced that ANYTHING under 3 miles is doable by most of the population. This is especially true for people who goto the gym to workout. If you took that gym time and converted that time to travel time by bike you’d probably gain back overall time. You would save money on multiple fronts. I have lost more weight in the last 3 months than I did going to the gym in the 6 months prior to that.

I will probably attempt to ride my bike all the way home on Friday from Wilmington. It will let me leave early without waiting for the train. By than the few days of above freezing weather will allow all the snow and ice to melt on the roads so I won’t have that to deal with. It will be a good test. I plan to-do it on the brompton. Its just so much easier to-do on the train than bringing a full sized bike.
